Starting with the PMBOK® Guide
The PMBOK® Guide contains 49 project management processes distributed across 5 process groups and 10 knowledge areas.
Suddenly, Project Management sounds like an ad for a car with superb engines, crisp handling, excellent dynamic feedback and a performance can embarrass sports car drivers without breaking a sweat.
The handbook dictates a very specific series of process groups that should be performed. These are referred to as Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring and Controlling, and Closing. Process Groups help you apply what knowledge you have about the different professional areas of project management (i.e., knowledge areas).
The following video gives a brief introduction of the project life cycle, the process groups and the knowledge areas.
A project life cycle is the series of phases that a project passes through from its start to its completion. Note that project life cycles are independent of product life cycles, which may be produced by a project. A product life cycle is the series of phases that represent the evolution of a product, from concept through delivery, growth, maturity, and to retirement.
Off to a good start! :)
