Software project management tools: Issue boards
I’ve been working with Atlassian’s Jira® for more than a decade now and it seems I can’t live without the Jira software board.
An agility board displays issues from one or more projects so that Teams can view and manage their work. A crucial part of this experience is allowing teams to build workflows in context by dragging and dropping columns directly on the board.
As an avid Jira user, I must admit I looked down on other issue tracking tools. I just couldn’t see why I should bother.
My mind changed quite recently, when I was introduced to the GitLab Issue Board. It’s yet another agility board but this one, is more manageable. GitLab was designed to shorten DevOps cycle time by bridging silos and stages, so it’s no wonder that their issue board is so flexible and focused in maximising team performance.
It pairs issue tracking and project management, keeping everything in the same place, so that you don’t need to jump between different platforms to organize your workflow. You define your process, and GitLab organizes it for you. You add your labels then create the corresponding list to pull in your existing issues. When you’re ready, you can drag and drop your issue cards from one step to the next.
Gitlab has done a great job! Their issue board is a great example of how choosing to build a single, versatile tool can significantly reduce complexity and tooling maintenance for the user without limiting its capabilities.
