There has been a lot of discussion in both the US and European countries about the need of thoughtfulness in the design of algorithms and data science. Apparently, data storytelling (a methodology for communicating information, tailored to a specific audience) can create damaging cultural narratives. When done correctly, data stories can influence decisions and drive positive change. When not, they can reinforce injustice and inequality for vulnerable people. It has been argued that the computing professionals who develop the insights and the data visualizations into impactful data stories need to build empathy to think of the unintended consequences that misleading data and visuals may have on their viewers.

It is not a matter of empathy. Computing professionals should abide by a Code of Ethics (https://www.acm.org/code-of-ethics) that is designed to guide their ethical conduct. The Code specifically mentions to “Be fair and take action not to discriminate”. If this is not applied, then associations share the responsibility of coming together as part of a larger, resourceful, and influential community and create the motivational setting to promote the common good: Connect younger professionals with experienced mentors in meaningful, one to one mentoring relationships; support mentoring relationships through guided learning experiences; and facilitate continued learning.
